Can’t get sound to work by default on my Jaunty box (Compaq 610 laptop), so I had to follow this interesting blog to upgrade to Alsa 1.0.21, and voila, it works! Of course there’s always the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide for other cases.
